What these numbers are

Each value is the highest wind gust an airport weather station reported during its own local calendar day. ASOS stations sample wind every second, and a gust is the highest 5-second average wind speed (NWS ASOS documentation, weather.gov/asos).

These are measurements at the station, not estimates. Wind a few miles away can be lower or higher, especially under thunderstorms, where a downburst can be only a few miles wide.

How the list is built

StormAuditor collects every station’s daily peak gust from the public ASOS/AWOS record each night and ranks them.

Station gusts vs. the wind at your address

The nearest station is often several miles from a home. StormAuditor estimates the peak gust at the address itself from the NWS analysis of record (URMA), corrected by nearby measured gusts and storm reports under the published wind methodology.

Enter an address above: the Free Report Snapshot shows whether the estimated gust at the property reached 45 mph, free with an account. A Weather Report lists the estimated peak gust for every storm date in the past two years (included with Pro, or $2.99 for one address), and a $2.99 Audit Report shows the stations, their distances and the arithmetic behind one date’s estimate.

Frequently asked questions

What was the highest wind gust in the U.S. yesterday?

The table at the top of this page lists the 25 highest gusts measured by ASOS/AWOS airport weather stations across the U.S. yesterday, with the station, state, speed in mph and the local time of each peak. The list refreshes every day.

How windy was it yesterday in my state?

Pick your state in the state selector to see the strongest gusts its stations measured yesterday. For your own address, enter it above: the Free Report Snapshot shows whether the estimated gust there reached 45 mph, and a Weather Report gives the estimated peak gust for each storm date.

What is the difference between a wind gust and sustained wind?

Sustained wind is an average over about two minutes. A gust is a brief peak; ASOS stations report the highest 5-second average. Gusts are the number that matters most for roof and tree damage.

Why is the wind at my house different from the nearest station?

Stations sit at airports, often miles from a home, and gusts vary over short distances, especially in thunderstorms. StormAuditor estimates the peak gust at the address from the NWS analysis of record corrected by nearby measured gusts.

Can I see wind gusts for an earlier date?

Yes. The Storm Map shows every station’s measured peak gust for past storm days in a state, free with an account, and a Weather Report for an address lists every storm date in the past two years with the estimated peak gust at the property.
