The wind map draws estimated peak wind gusts across an entire state for any date, built on the NWS analysis of record (URMA/HRRR) with ASOS/AWOS station gusts and NWS warnings overlaid. Wind swaths show where damaging gusts concentrated; station markers show what was actually measured and where.

What a wind swath actually represents
A swath on this map is the NWS analysis of record's view of peak gusts, colored by speed band and sharpened by real measurements where instruments exist. Broad synoptic wind events paint smooth regional swaths; convective days produce narrow corridors where a downburst or bowing segment tracked. The distinction matters commercially: a 60 mph synoptic band stresses fences and aging shingles across a wide area, while a 70 mph convective corridor can concentrate real roof damage along a few miles. The explorer shows station markers alongside the analysis precisely so you can see where the swath is measurement-anchored and where it is analysis-only.
